Margie Shafer

The smiling face you see when you first walk through the doors of KVNE is that of Margie Shafer, quite possibly the friendliest person you will ever meet. If talking with Margie - in person or on the phone - doesn't make you smile, we would suggest you seek immediate medical attention!
Ten Questions with Margie Shafer
1. When did you join Encouragement FM?
In November of 1995 during a PraiseShare, I came with my husband as he helped to answer phones. I came just to watch, I did not want to talk on the phone! Later that year the stations needed help updating the database, so my husband and I came in and helped with that. Then I started volunteering a couple days a week, which lead me to working part-time in February of 1996. In March of 1999 I came on as full time employee.
2. What do you do now and what other job(s) have you held here?
Receptionist and recently Troy added the title of Director of First Impressions, I feel very humble by this title.
3. Where else have you done similar work?
This is my first experience as receptionist. I did in-home childcare and house cleaning before coming here, which may have been the Lord's way of training me for here!
4. Where did you go to school?
I graduated high school from Oskaloosa Senior High, Oskaloosa Iowa in 1972. Go Osky Indians!
5. Describe your family.
I married my husband, Dennis, in 1971. We will celebrate our 38th wedding anniversary in July 2009! Our oldest daughter Holly is married to a farmer/machinist and they live in Bussey, Iowa with their two children, Larissa, who's 13, and Corbin, who's two (and a half!). Our daughter, Hobby, lives in Chandler, Texas, with her two children: Hannah, who's five and Jacob who's two. (I love being a grandma!) Our son, Jeremiah, is in the U.S. Army, based at Ft. Riley, Kansas. He has done one tour in Iraq and will be going to Afghanistan later this year. Jeremiah met his girlfriend, Ashley, who lives in California, through the Adopt-a-Solider Program. It's a love story!
6. What do you enjoy most about working here?
WOW, where do I begin. Hearing and seeing how the Lord is working in listeners lives. Working with this wonderful staff of co-workers that I can call family, and see how the Lord has been working in their lives, too.
7. Why are you working in this ministry rather than in the for-profit/secular world?
I believe the Lord has put me here for a purpose. I love being able to let my light shine for HIM whether it might be through a phone call or a listener stopping by. Sometimes it might be a stranger looking for another address who just stops in to ask for directions. I am very thankful and grateful for my position here.
8. Share a funny story about working here?
It was during a birthday party for one of our co-workers here. Mike showed up dressed like a clown with balloons and all. What a surprise, he had us all laughing and having a great time!
9. What is your best memory or proudest accomplishment from your time here?
A listener came to the station to give us four pennies. They told me that they listen all the time and the stations have been such an encouragement to them and they wanted to help. All they had were four pennies but they gave it so proudly to be a part of the ministry to help encourage others!
10. What do you hope to accomplish here?
I want to share the love of Jesus with all I come in contact with, maybe a kind word, a smile, a prayer. Also, to make sure that there is chocolate hidden in the building somewhere for the staff on those crazy days when they are in desperate need of sugar! :-)
